About Nan's Cottage

Nan's Cottage is a welcoming retreat in Carn Brea, close to Carn Brea and Redruth and five miles from the coast at Portreath. The one-bedroom holiday cottage is ideal for couples or independent travellers, including those with dogs, who are looking for a peaceful place where they can unwind and relax. It is available for bookings between March to October, so whether you want to surf the summer days away or enjoy a shot of autumn sunshine walking your dog on empty beaches, you'll find Nan's Cottage a welcoming place to stay while you're here.

Carn Brea is one of Cornwall's highest points, topped by Bassett's Monument and reaching a towering 738 feet above sea level at its highest point. Although it's less than a mile from the cottage to the base of Bassett's Monument, it's not a hill you will want to sprint up. Take your time and stop along the way to catch your breath under the guise of admiring the views - onlookers certainly won't judge! Carn Brea Castle is a mile along the ridge. Originally a chapel and then a hunting lodge, it is now a restaurant. Other top choices for a walk include the South West Coast Path and the 250-acre Tehidy Country Park. Cyclists also enjoy the landscape with a designated cycle trail running from Portreath to Devoran, and the Great Flat Lode trail following an old tram route through the historic mining landscape.

Shop for food and other self-catering needs in Redruth, a lively market town with a good choice of shops. It's part of the Cornish Mining UNESCO World Heritage Site with attractions that include Mineral Tramways, Gwennap Pit, and Cornwall Gold. Other places to visit include the Moseley Toy and Train Museum and St Euny Church. Cornwall's mild climate leads to spectacular gardens like those at Penrose Water Gardens, the Trevarno Estate, Roseland House, and Godolphin House.

Portreath has a sandy beach, narrow harbour and a viewpoint with the creepy moniker of "dead man's hut". The beach is popular for swimming, surfing and bodyboarding. Though it gets busy in summer - as do most beaches along this stretch of coast - it doesn't feel touristy and is a favourite with locals and visitors.
