Corn Loft is perfect for couples or solo travellers who want to treat themselves to 4-Star quality accommodation in Cornwall. The one-bedroom cottage is on the family-run Higher Carthew Farm and within a World Heritage Site, close to the coast and the Lizard Peninsula and within a mile of the village shop and pub.
When people think about a holiday in Cornwall, they may picture rolling fields and countryside, and they certainly imagine fishing villages with sandy beaches and an impressive coastline. However, Cornwall is so much more. This region was one of the world's leading producers of tin and lead - a history so important that 20,000 acres of Cornwall are protected as part of the UNESCO Cornish Mining Site. For over 300 years, the area around Higher Carthew Farm was renowned for the quality and quantity of its tin, and you can see the remnants of some engine houses at Wheal Ann, Trumpet Consols and Wheal Ennis. Poldark Mine gives visitors the chance to go underground and see what a mine was like in the 1700s. Walk around Carnmenellis to see miner's smallholdings, and across Porkellis Moor to witness how the land has recovered over time. You don't have to be interested in mining or old buildings to appreciate the landscape's rugged beauty.
Helston is a short drive from the Corn Loft. The friendly market town has been an economic centre of this rural community for centuries, and it is as relevant today as ever. Helston has a wide choice of places to eat and drink, shops to browse and pick up self-catering provisions, a weekly market and a busy farmers market on the first Saturday morning of the month where all produce sold comes from within a 20-mile radius. Helston's other attractions include The Museum of Cornish Life, Coronation Park, and the Penrose reserve with walks and cycling paths. Step into the past on Five Wells Lane, or take a gentle stroll from the centre of town to Loe Pool and its peaceful setting.
No holiday in Cornwall is complete without a trip to the seaside. You're spoiled for choice when you stay at Corn Loft. Drive north to Portreath and Hayle's golden sandy shores, or head south to Porthleven and Swanpool. The Lizard Peninsula is barely a 20-minute drive from the cottage, with miles of spectacular coastline, broad beaches and hidden coves that you can access via the South West Coast Path.
