About Station House

Station House is so charming that you could easily imagine it as part of a film set. Built by the Manchester and Milford Railway as the Strata Florida Railway Station Master’s house, it has been sympathetically modernised to provide very comfortable accommodation for couples and families who enjoy spending time outdoors in the countryside and on the coast. It is perfect for self-catering but, with the popular Black Lion in Pontrydfendigaid just over a mile away and several other great pubs in the area, there are lots of options if you don’t feel like cooking.

The house is close to Ystrad Meurig, Ffair-rhos and Pontrhydfendigaid villages. The old railway line has been transformed into the Ystwyth Trail which is a favourite for walkers and cyclists of all abilities. Station House is on the Cors Caron Nature Reserve. Bwlch Nant Yr Arian Forest visitor centre is also only thirty minutes away with excellent mountain bike trails, a new skills park, cafe and Red Kite daily feeding centre. Brechfa Forest and mountain bike centre is also within driving distance (an hour) for those happy to travel a little further, and there are exciting trails around Machynlleth too.

As well as wonderful walking opportunities, there are several hides for bird watching and always something beautiful to watch and appreciate whatever the season. A really nice place to walk around is the ruins of the Strata Florida Abbey where there is also an excellent local visitor centre with information about other walks nearby, including around Tregaron Bog.

Cardigan Bay is renowned for the beauty of its beaches, and the historic beach resort of Aberystwyth is only half an hour’s drive away. Aberystwyth has a long Victorian pier, promenade with traditional seaside entertainment, and a lovely stretch of sandy beach. It is a lively town with a large university campus, medieval castle ruins, a funicular railway, hillside fort, museum, and the National Library of Wales. Nearby beaches include Borth, Ynyslas and Clarach.

Lampeter is another friendly town where you can shop, eat and browse, while Llandrindod Wells, Cardigan (Aberteifi), Carmarthen and Machynlleth are other good choices for a day out. Mid-Wales is the ideal destination for a relaxed holiday with your favourite people, and staying in a character property like this charming station master’s house will only add to the fun.

Accommodation Comprises:

The accommodation at Station House is over two levels. The property has central heating and WiFi, and is expertly decorated and furnished to ensure you have everything you need for an enjoyable stay.

Ground Floor:

  • The focal point of the living area is the stone fireplace in which is a 'wood effect' electric stove. A large leather corner sofa faces the fire and the flat screen television. It is a lovely room for snuggling up on a cold night, and equally pleasant during the day when it benefits from lots of natural light.
  • The dining area has a wooden dining table with four chairs. As with the living room, it also benefits from plenty of natural light and has views over the garden. There is also an oil-fired Rayburn range cooker which also provides the house's central heating.
  • A fitted kitchen is painted in sunny yellow and white. There is a modern oven, grill and hob in here together with a fridge/freezer, microwave and benchtop dishwasher. The owners have taken care to ensure you have all the crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils you need whether you are frying an egg for breakfast or making a full roast dinner.
  • On the other side of the hallway to the living/dining room, a convenient utility room houses a washing machine, tumble drier and other laundry equipment.
  • The family bathroom has a bath with shower attachment as well as a separate walk-in shower cubicle, WC and handbasin.

First Floor:

  • The master bedroom is at the front of the house and enjoys incredible views of the Cambrian Mountains and Cors Caron Nature Reserve. This generously sized room has a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables and reading lamps. A travel cot can be provided on request.
  • The second bedroom has single bunk beds and a chest of drawers. There is a large window that overlooks the neighbouring field.

Outside: The gated garden is mainly lawn with some mature trees, fruit trees and shrubs. There is off street parking for one car next to the cottage.

Additional Information: All utilities, linen and towels are included. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small charge and with prior agreement from the owner. Short breaks may be possible out of season. Station Cottage is close to Station House, and both properties can be hired together to accommodate larger groups, depending on availability. No smoking.
