Fern Cottage is a gorgeous self-contained holiday cottage in West Wales. Surrounded by the lush, green countryside typical of this region, it's only 10 miles or less than 20 minutes from spectacular beaches like Llangrannog. Fern Cottage is part of the Thistledown smallholding where the owners have created a rural haven where they raise chickens, ducks and two friendly sheep. The cottage is one of two charming holiday retreats, each sleeping two guests in one bedroom. The owner has also handcrafted two wooden shepherds' huts for glamping, focusing on building and landscaping using reclaimed and recycled materials and traditional techniques that allow Thistledown to sit gently in the landscape. Fern Cottage is ideal for couples with room for a travel cot for infants.
Thistledown is in Panteg Cross near Llandysul in Ceredigion. Although it feels as if it's in the middle of nowhere, it is just a short drive to the Ceredigion Coastal Path and only a few minutes from spectacular beaches, you'll never want to leave. The cottage is very well equipped for self-catering, but you'll find a wide choice of excellent pubs and restaurants all serving seasonal menus of locally grown and reared produce if you feel like dining out. You can stock up on provisions for self-catering seven miles away in the market town of Newcastle Emlyn. It's one of the bigger market towns in the Teifi Valley where independent retailers are joined by family-run butchers and grocers, a deli, galleries and lots more.
Some of the most beautiful beaches in Wales are found along this stretch of Ceredigion coastline. Blue Flag and highly rated for water quality, Ceredigion beaches welcome dogs all year round, though some may have a few restricted areas between May and September. Favourites include the harbour beach at New Quay, close to where boats leave for dolphin-spotting tours. National Trust Mwnt beach is reached via a steep path from the parking area, rewarding visitors with a secluded sandy bay and the potential to see dolphins and porpoises from the shore. Aberporth and Cwmtydu are also worth considering.
Ceredigion and the Teifi Valley have something for everyone. Miles of footpaths, various on and off-road cycling routes, watersports, fishing, and golfing. Attractions include the National Wool Mill, Cenarth Falls, the National Coracle Centre, Cardigan Castle, and the National Botanical Gardens of Wales.
Fern Cottage is available for bookings all year round, with short breaks (minimum of three nights) possible depending on availability.
