The Byre is a beautiful property in a stunning location. Its name acknowledges its former purpose for housing cows on Maes-y-Gwaelod Farm, but it has been given a new and very stylish lease of life thanks to its current owners who live nearby and are happy to answer any questions you have about the local area so that you can make the most of your stay. It is quiet and peaceful and, with space for four people in three bedrooms, is perfect for couples and families.
Llandovery is around five miles from the cottage. The market town was built around the Norman castle - now a picturesque ruin - and it was a favourite stopping off point for drovers moving cattle and sheep. Llandovery is close to four rivers, including Y Bawddwr which runs through the town, and Afon Tywi which is the closest to the farm and offers excellent fishing from April to September. It has several friendly pubs and cafes and a small supermarket. Further shops and amenities are in Carmarthen, Lampeter and Builth Wells, all of which are about an hour’s drive from The Byre.
The owners understand their guests and have done a fantastic job making sure the cottage is welcoming for everyone, including dogs. Those who bring their mountain bikes will appreciate the washing and secure storage facilities after a day testing their skills at Cwm Rhaeadr, Brechfa Forest or Coed Trallwm. Less experienced riders will enjoy the gently undulating track around the Usk Reservoir while those more experienced will enjoy the trails in the nearby Afan Valley. Motorbikers are also catered for, with private off-road parking and cleaning facilities provided.
Llandovery is on the very western edge of the Brecon Beacons, and there are some incredible footpaths with outstanding views nearby. A favourite is a circular route which takes you around the lake of Llyn y Fan Fach and up to Bannau Sir Gaer on the Carmarthen Fan; or you could set your sights on the Cambrian Mountains, the hills above the village of Cilycwm or Garn Goch. Cwm Rhaeadr is managed by the Forestry Commission and has footpaths as well as cycling trails. One of the most popular routes with guests is to the top of Pen y Fan which, at 886 metres, is the highest peak in southern Britain. The Crychan and Halfway forests are both close by, with miles of footpaths, cycling trails and bridleways, giving guests even more variety to suit their ability.
Being in Mid-Wales makes The Byre central to some fantastic attractions in addition to those already mentioned. Swansea and the beautiful beaches of The Gower are around 40 miles away, as are the West Wales beaches of Aberaeron, New Quay and Llangrannog, or you could simply head out for the day and tour the lanes and mountain roads, stopping where you see a particularly lovely view.
The welcoming accommodation and the peaceful location of The Byre will ensure that you sleep soundly and awaken refreshed and ready to enjoy every day of your stay.
