About The Byre

The Byre is a beautiful property in a stunning location. Its name acknowledges its former purpose for housing cows on Maes-y-Gwaelod Farm, but it has been given a new and very stylish lease of life thanks to its current owners who live nearby and are happy to answer any questions you have about the local area so that you can make the most of your stay. It is quiet and peaceful and, with space for four people in three bedrooms, is perfect for couples and families.

Llandovery is around five miles from the cottage. The market town was built around the Norman castle - now a picturesque ruin - and it was a favourite stopping off point for drovers moving cattle and sheep. Llandovery is close to four rivers, including Y Bawddwr which runs through the town, and Afon Tywi which is the closest to the farm and offers excellent fishing from April to September. It has several friendly pubs and cafes and a small supermarket. Further shops and amenities are in Carmarthen, Lampeter and Builth Wells, all of which are about an hour’s drive from The Byre.

The owners understand their guests and have done a fantastic job making sure the cottage is welcoming for everyone, including dogs. Those who bring their mountain bikes will appreciate the washing and secure storage facilities after a day testing their skills at Cwm Rhaeadr, Brechfa Forest or Coed Trallwm. Less experienced riders will enjoy the gently undulating track around the Usk Reservoir while those more experienced will enjoy the trails in the nearby Afan Valley. Motorbikers are also catered for, with private off-road parking and cleaning facilities provided.

Llandovery is on the very western edge of the Brecon Beacons, and there are some incredible footpaths with outstanding views nearby. A favourite is a circular route which takes you around the lake of Llyn y Fan Fach and up to Bannau Sir Gaer on the Carmarthen Fan; or you could set your sights on the Cambrian Mountains, the hills above the village of Cilycwm or Garn Goch. Cwm Rhaeadr is managed by the Forestry Commission and has footpaths as well as cycling trails. One of the most popular routes with guests is to the top of Pen y Fan which, at 886 metres, is the highest peak in southern Britain. The Crychan and Halfway forests are both close by, with miles of footpaths, cycling trails and bridleways, giving guests even more variety to suit their ability.

Being in Mid-Wales makes The Byre central to some fantastic attractions in addition to those already mentioned. Swansea and the beautiful beaches of The Gower are around 40 miles away, as are the West Wales beaches of Aberaeron, New Quay and Llangrannog, or you could simply head out for the day and tour the lanes and mountain roads, stopping where you see a particularly lovely view.

The welcoming accommodation and the peaceful location of The Byre will ensure that you sleep soundly and awaken refreshed and ready to enjoy every day of your stay.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Byre is a detached stone cottage with accommodation spread over two floors.

  • Entry is through a spacious hallway and into a pleasant kitchen/diner with a large window that overlooks the garden at the rear of the property. The built-in kitchen is well equipped to make self-catering easy, and there is a large wooden dining table with pew seating that is perfect for family meals.
  • The cosy sitting room is made even more welcoming in winter thanks to a log burning stove. It has two two-seater leather sofas and two bean bags, so you can flop down and stretch out in front of the television which has Freeview channels and a DVD player. A chest of drawers has games and books for guests to enjoy during their stay.

  • The large master bedroom has a double bed and double aspect windows that overlook the front and side of the cottage. Exposed beams and a window seat add to the appeal, as does the DAB radio.
  • The other two bedrooms are both single rooms, each with a single bed.
  • Family bathroom has a shower above the bath, WC and handbasin.

Outside: There is a shared utility room at the side of The Byre, housing a washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as airing racks for drying wet boots and outdoor clothing. The room is lockable and can also be used for bicycle storage. Guests of The Byre have shared use of the mature gardens. A courtyard at the front of the cottage is lovely in the morning. There is a private lawn area at the rear of the cottage with a barbecue and garden furniture. The Byre has off-road parking for a car and motorcycles.

Additional Information: Utilities and linen are included, with towels being provided for a small surcharge if requested when booking. Up to three well-behaved dogs are welcome with prior agreement from the owner (£5 per dog per night applies with a maximum charge of £25 per dog per week). They are not to be left in the cottage on their own and must be kept on a lead when on farm property as there are farm animals nearby. Short breaks are available all year round with a 1-2 night break starting at £160 for up to 2 people; £190 for 3 people and £240 for 4 (full prices on the owners website). No smoking is permitted.

Prices: A flat rate is offered all year round with £460 charged per week for 1 or 2 people; £630 for 3 people and £700 charged when 4 people are renting.
