About Sugarloaf Cottage

Sugarloaf Cottage is perfect for friends who want somewhere comfortable to stay in the Brecon Beacons, with excellent access to footpaths and mountain bike trails as well as a location convenient for shops and other amenities. It sleeps four people in three bedrooms (one double and two singles) and is within a 10-minute walk of two friendly pubs in Llangattock, the Horseshoe Inn and The Vinetree. One of a collection of six self-contained holiday homes for adults (and infants) only, guests can enjoy a good degree of privacy, tranquility and a wealth of places to walk, cycle, cave, and climb from the front door.

Crickhowell is nearby and has a friendly community which has worked hard to keep it free from generic chain stores, which means walking down the high street is a delight of independent boutiques, food shops, and pubs like The Bear and The Dragon Inn. Further amenities can be found in Abergavenny, which has two supermarkets, a thrice-weekly market and various other places to eat, drink and shop. Brecon and Monmouth are also within easy reach for groceries and browsing.

History is everywhere you look around Llangattock. Being close to the English border means there are lots of castles in various states of repair. The Three Castle Walk takes in Grosmont, Skenfrith and White Castles, but there are also ruins in Abergavenny, Brecon, Tretower, and even a lonely tower in Crickhowell. Tintern Abbey and Llanthony Priory show how thorough Henry VIII's sacking was during the reformation. Both are within reach by car, but cyclists may want to ride there instead, taking in the incredible views along the way. More recently, the region was a hive of the mining industry. The Llangattock Escarpment shows signs of quarrying sandstone and limestone. The area south of Llangattock had dozens of collieries mining coal - some of which went to feed the insatiable smelting fires at the Ironworks in Blaenavon. Together with Big Pit, the Ironworks makeup part of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site and show how locals contributed to the Industrial Revolution.

The landscape around Sugarloaf Cottage is stunning. The owner's live close to the cottage and are happy to help with recommendations for places to go walking or mountain biking, in addition to the information they have provided in the cottage. A favourite local walk is in the Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve behind the cottage and a wonderful mix of woodland, meadows, birds and wildlife, along with caves and some industrial remnants. You can walk from the cottage to the Sugarloaf, Table Mountain, Llangattock Mountain, Waun Fach and Pen-Allt-mawr in the Black Mountains. Drive a short distance to the base of Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du, climb the Dragon's Back near Pengenfford, or walk up beside the waterfalls in Talybont.

Mountain bikers have their choice of nearby single track, cross-country, downhill and gravel bike trails, with bike hire available locally if it's required. The Llangattock Escarpment and nearby Clydach Gorge have some of the most comprehensive caving systems in Wales. You can go fly-fishing on the Usk, play golf, take a guided pony trek, or sail on Llangorse Lake. There's no end to the ways you can have fun in the Brecon Beacons when you stay at Sugarloaf Cottage.
