Oak Tree Cottage is a fantastic cottage in a stunning location in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Formerly a stable block, it has been skilfully converted to provide accommodation for six people in three bedrooms and is ideal for groups of friends (adults and infants only). The views toward Llangattock Mountain are amazing, and it's an incredible feeling to wake up each morning knowing that you can step outside the door and into this beautiful landscape. The cottage is one of several beautifully converted adults and infants only cottages on the owner's farm on the outskirts of Llangattock, close to Crickhowell and within walking distance of the welcoming Horseshoe Inn and The Vinetree.
The Brecon Beacons is famous for the beauty of the landscape and the diversity of its history and the wealth of different activities people enjoy here. Walking and mountain biking are two of the most accessible ways to explore. Walk from the cottage to the top of the Sugarloaf or to the peak of Table Mountain, Llangattock Mountain and Pen-Allt-mawr. A short drive takes you to the base of Pen-y-Fan and footpaths to Corn Du and Cribyn. Less challenging is the walk around the Craig y Cilau nature reserve behind the farm. It's protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It has centuries-old woodland, rare trees and wildlife, caves and a disappearing stream, and signs of the region's industrial past when coal was mined to feed the ironworks and quarries that produced vast quantities of limestone and sandstone. The walk into Crickhowell - a charming town with excellent pubs like The Bear and The Dragon Inn, boutiques and cafes - takes around 35 minutes and involves crossing the River Usk. Guests also enjoy walking and cycling beside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, which winds its way through 35 miles of beautiful scenery.
The Llangattock Escarpment has some of the longest cave systems in Wales and is within walking distance of the cottage. The local area also has opportunities for guided pony treks, fly fishing on the Usk, playing golf, or rowing on Llangorse Lake.
You don't have to be an outdoorsy type of person to love staying at Oak Tree Cottage. There is plenty to see and do that doesn't involve mountains or rivers. Wander around Abergavenny to see the ruins of a Norman castle, an excellent local museum, a lovely indoor market hall with markets at least four days a week, plenty of independent shops and places to eat, and a famous food festival on the third weekend every September. Brecon is also worth visiting, as is Monmouth. Wales has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Europe, many of them along the English border. Grosmont, Skenfrith and White Castles make up the Three Castles walk, and you can see the remains of other castles in Crickhowell, Brecon, Hay and Tretower. Llantony Priory and Tintern Abbey are also worth visiting, both within 45 minutes of the cottage.
All of the cottages on-site are completely private and self-contained. They can, depending on availability, be booked together to accommodate extended families or groups of friends. Please see the owner's website for details.
Please note that the owners are currently undertaking building and improvement works at Oak Tree Cottage. Photos will be updated in March 2022 to include the changes which will include a new modern kitchen with dishwasher, and a larger louge area including a new sofa and arm chair. The smaller twin room will become a study which can also be used as a nursery or as extra storage space.
