About Hay View Lodges - Drovers Lodge

Hay View Lodges are two outstanding self-catering properties in a stunning location on the Welsh Borders, set in a private location on a working farm that is just four miles from Hay on Wye and two miles from the popular Rhydspence Inn. Each lodge, which is dog-friendly, sleeps up to five guests and has been carefully furnished to provide a high standard of accommodation without fussiness or pretension.

The Welsh Borders are renowned for the breathtaking landscape. Walkers and cyclists come to pit their skills against the undulating hills and challenging mountains, tackling stretches of the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path, which passes a few hundred metres from the farm. You do not have to be a serious rambler to appreciate the views if you head to the nearby Begwyns as there is parking close to the highest point, the Roundabout, and an easy circular walk laid out by the National Trust which affords views of virtually all of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Cyclists are also well-catered for, with cycling trails near Hay on Wye including National Cycle routes 8 and 42 that go from Hay to the historic market towns of Brecon, with the 42 continuing to Abergavenny. The Black Mountains are well-known by mountain bikers whether they come for the punishing Grwyne Fawr loop that features 1,407 metres of climbing, or the less steep red trail around Llangorse and Mynydd Troed. The Begwyns have easy trails, and there is an excellent bike shop in Hay which can give advice and arrange bike hire if you need it.

Llangorse is the largest natural lake in South Wales and the site for many water activities including fishing and canoeing, as do the River Wye and the Elan Valley. Horse riding is a favourite pastime with several excellent stables offering pony trekking close to Hay View Lodges. Slightly further afield, the Forest of Dean and Symonds Yat provide more walking, cycling and horse riding venues.

Hay on Wye is well known as a book town and hosts an annual Literary Festival that draws visitors from around the world. As well as a variety of independent specialist bookshops, it has some great places to eat and drink. The lush countryside lends itself perfectly to succulent lamb and beef, and the variety of local food producers is fantastic whether you have a meal at a nearby pub or buy ingredients at the regular Thursday market. Nearby, Abergavenny, Ross-on-Wye, Brecon and Crickhowell also have amazing pubs, food and shopping, while if you like history then you will find a wealth of castles reminding you that this area was once a fiercely contested border.

Whether you stay on your own, with your children, or you hire both lodges to spend time with family and friends whom you do not see very often, Hay View Lodges’ spectacular location makes it easy to enjoy this beautiful part of the world.

Location (The Brecon Beacons)

Drovers Lodge - Accommodation Comprises:

  • The living, dining and kitchen is one light-filled open plan space, meaning that you can enjoy the stunning views even when you are cooking. Glass French doors open onto the wooden balcony from which you can enjoy incredible views of the Wye Valley towards the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains.
  • The living room has two large couches and a flatscreen television with satellite channels. The entire chalet has central heating and double glazing and feels warm and welcoming even in winter.
  • Fitted kitchen area with benches that span the width of the lodge, and features that include a dishwasher, microwave and fridge/freezer. The owners have also provided a washing machine and iron.
  • Master bedroom with a double bed, bedside tables and reading lights. It benefits from an ensuite with shower, WC and handbasin.
  • The other two bedrooms are a twin room and a single bedroom and both are furnished equally as well, with good quality mattresses and linen to aid restful sleep.
  • A family shower room has a walk-in shower, WC and handbasin.

Outside: There is a covered wooden deck with table and chairs, as well as a private garden next to the lodge, and off street parking for several cars.

Additional information: Both lodges are dog-friendly with up to two well-behaved dogs being welcome by prior agreement. The owner can provide a pet-sitting and a grooming service if you want to go out for the day without your pet or give you pet some pampering. This is a rural area so some mobile phone users may find their reception is patchy. WiFi access is limited but fine for sending and receiving emails. All utilities, linen and towels are provided. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability. No smoking.

Group Bookings: The two lodges are virtually identical and can be booked together to accommodate large groups of up to twelve, depending on availability. However, they are separate with their own privacy.
