Cruachan Cabin - Dalavich, Argyll and Bute, Scotland - Sleeps 5

Cruachan Cabin

Cruachan Cabin is a slice of Scottish heaven! Surrounded by mature forest on the shore of Loch Awe, it feels wonderfully remote, yet it is only thirty miles from Oban and two hours from Glasgow. Sleeping five in one double room and one triple bunk room makes it a favourite with families who love the opportunity to spend time together outdoors, walking, fishing, cycling and exploring a wonderful part of the world.

The cabin is in Dalavich. The village store is the heart of the community. In addition to basic groceries the store has a post office, cafe, off-licence, fishing licences and bicycle hire, and you can arrange boat hire nearby. Dalavich also has a restaurant with takeaway and a thriving social club and bar (which is where you will get internet access). The village may be tiny, with fewer than one hundred people, but the locals are friendly and generous with their hospitality.

Dalavich is home to an abundance of birds and wildlife. In a world of noise and pollution, it is a literal breath of fresh air! Children love spotting pine martins, and it is one of the few parts of the UK where you can witness red squirrels scampering along branches and going about their business. Red deer and roe deer are plentiful, or look to the skies to see Golden Eagles, Osprey, and Sea Eagles.

Half an hour north of Dalavich, Taynuilt is a larger village with more amenities, including a fantastic restaurant at the Taynuilt Hotel. Ben Cruachan towers protectively over the village, offering wonderful walking paths and mountain biking. There is also a golf course and the historic Bonawe Iron Furnace which, with a walk around the Glen Nant National Nature Reserve, is a great day out.

Oban is a further twenty minute drive from Taynuilt. Oban is an amazing town full of fantastic independent cafes, restaurants and pubs serving delicious local produce, particularly seafood that is caught in the surrounding waters. While in Oban you can catch a ferry to one of the nearby islands, take on the challenge of the stairs in McCaig’s Tower and be rewarded with breathtaking views, visit the Scottish Sea Life & Marine Sanctuary, and explore the romantic ruins of Dunollie Castle.

Loch Awe and Argyll is a beautiful place that will stay with you forever, and Cruachan Cabin’s comfortable accommodation is a pleasure at any time of year.
