West End Cottage is a beautifully furnished grade 2 listed holiday cottage that is probably one of the oldest cottages in the village of Askrigg.
It is located right in the heart of the cobbled village centre opposite the church and has a lovely, large south facing walled garden with meadows and hills behind, providing a real feel of being in the countryside, as indeed it is. It also has the added benefit of being just a stones throw from the pubs, restaurants and shops.
The cottage has a wealth of original character with planked floors and doors, stone flags and beamed ceilings throughout. The owners have beautifully restored the cottage in an understated yet exceptionally tasteful fashion, so that it has a feeling of luxury with features such as the hand built kitchen with Rayburn stove and wonderful kingsize master bedroom with massive beams. Yet it has not lost any of its original character which will impress you as soon as you walk through the door.
Askrigg nestles beneath the stunning fells of Ellerkin and Askrigg Common towards the top of Wensleydale. Its two and three storey stone cottages and houses line the main street, with the 15th century parish church in the centre of the village in the old cobbled market place, which still has its market cross and iron bull ring set into the cobbles.
Visitors may recognise Cringley House as ‘Skeldale House’ from the BBC television series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ with the Kings Arms being the ‘Drovers Arms’ from the same series. There is a good village shop where you can buy all your basic groceries and the village also has a delicatessen where local produce can be purchased, a newsagents and three pubs which serve food.

Off the living room and also at the front of the house is the cosy stone flagged dining room, with traditional old round table and chairs and antique dresser and also the original stone shelved scullery for the cottage - now a useful pantry and utility room, with ample storage space.
Pretty hand built kitchen with Rayburn stove (very easy to operate).
Back door leading across a grassed area of garden belonging to the house next door, to the old barn behind the cottage, with its south facing walled garden at the back, belonging to West End Cottage which guests have exclusive use of. The barn gives ample storage space for outdoor gear and bikes, and the garden is a real sun trap with a raised patio area with garden furniture.
Two charming and spacious single bedrooms on the first floor, along with the family shower room with a spacious and modern power shower.
Master bedroom is up a further flight of stairs tucked away at the top of the cottage, with stunning views over the hills beyond. This is a kingsized bedroom with a massively beamed ceiling - a truly romantic place to hide yourself away in and relax.
Additional information: Oil and fuel for fires included in the hire charge. Firelighters, matches and kindling provided for your arrival. Tea tray on arrival. Sorry, no pets or smokers. You may wish to be aware that there are occasional steps inside the cottage, so it may not be suitable for people who have difficulty with stairs. Onstreet parking. Garden with garden furniture and charcoal barbeque. Towel hire available. Please note that as there are no stairgates so the cottage is not suitable for very young children.
