Holiday in Warwickshire

Perhaps the greatest claim to fame for Warwickshire is the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. The author of Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and Hamlet hardly needs an introduction and there is a real literary feel around the small market town where he was born. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre provides authentic Shakespearean plays, in addition to a host of other cultural activities and events throughout the year. The historic town has been active for the best part of a millennium and retains an old age charm and feel about it with its traditional buildings and numerous Shakespearean interest sites.

The county's history doesn't end with the theatre and famous playwrights, rather it has an important military heritage and the English Civil War Battle of Edgehill was held within its borders and played a major role in the history of the conflict. The Stratford Armouries Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon is a great place to see military items of old and learn more about the history of the county.

The Cotswolds also sneak into the county and they provide tranquil outdoor activities. The beautiful landscapes and hills provide a scenic natural setting right in the heart of middle England. For nature lovers The Cotswolds provide various walks and cycling routes set within the greenery and natural surroundings of the rolling hills, with a variety of wildlife, small historic towns and honey-coloured villages along the way. In fact, the region has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and for many people it has been a welcome escape from city and urban life for decades. Warwick Castle which was built by William The Conqueror back in the 11th century is another of Warwickshire's major attractions and is still very much intact, offering a fascinating glimpse into a centuries old construction.

While the county doesn't have any cities that fall within its boundaries, the town of Warwick is its closest thing. It still retains the overall feel of the county with a deep sense of tradition and heritage and rather than finding high streets filled with multi-national stores, it focuses on local and independent shops. Nightlife in the town can be lively and there is a market every Saturday and a farmers market at certain times of the year.

Warwickshire hasn't attempted to adapt itself to modernity and for a traditional view and experience of England; it can be difficult to find another place quite like it. While it has a fascinating heritage and is a predominately historical county, it also has fantastic natural settings, walks and days out for all the family and offers activities that everyone can enjoy.
