Located on the coastline of Cardigan Bay and in the heart of Snowdonia National Park, lies the picturesque village of Llwyngwril. This pretty holiday cottage, ‘Bron Wylfa’, is in the heart of the village and dates back to the early 1800s.
Originally owned by a Countess who owned most of the land in the area, the cottage was built as a typical Welsh stone terraced church cottage adjacent to the local chapel (which has now itself been converted into a house). The owners bought the cottage four years ago and have since completely refurbished and updated it, changing it quite considerably but managing to retain many of its lovely original features.
There are plenty of things to do and see in the area including:
Beaches – the best beaches can be found within a ten minute drive to Tywyn and onto Aberdovey which provide some of the finest beaches in Britain with four miles of golden sand-dune backed shoreline. The beaches are popular with sunbathers, swimmers, surfers, kiters and fishermen and attract a wide range of watersports enthusiasts. The climate between Llwyngwril and Aberdovey is surprisingly mild due to the surrounding horseshoe of mountains so you will often be in the only place in the UK where the sun is shining! Aberdovey itself is a trendy seaside village with great interior and gift shops, clothing boutiques and galleries that line the streets together with good restaurants, pubs, and cafes. It’s a great place to spend the day with the children who will always enjoy crabbing off the jetty. For more beaches, heading north there is a sandy beach five miles from the cottage in Fairbourne and ten minutes beyond that is the huge sandy beach at Barmouth. Alternatively, stay locally and enjoy Llwyngwrils lovely pebbly beach, just a short walk from the cottage.
Walking –Llwyngwril is at the foot of the spectacular Cader Idris mountain range and there are fantastic walks nearby including treks up Cader Idris and around the stunning glacial mountain lakes. These are complimented by the charm of the Dovey and Dysynni valleys. It’s an ideal area for walkers, climbers and wildlife watchers. There are also waterfalls to explore such as those at Dolgoch Falls.
Cycling – Coed y Brenin (Forest of Kings) is fantastic for both cyclists and walkers and great for both children and hard core mountain bikers. The forest lies at the heart of the Welsh gold prospecting area and is the oldest and most extensive forest in Wales. There are fifty miles of marked tracks as well as picnic areas, a funky children’s play area and a great ‘natural food’ café.
Golf and horse riding - There is a championship links golf course which lies to the landward side of the dunes. Horse riding and trekking centres are also nearby in the village of Arthog.
Places to visit - The nearby market towns of Dolgellau and Machynlleth are good for strolling around. Barmouth is about twenty minutes away and there are craft centres, narrow gauge steam railways (the one at Tywyn is great and they have Thomas the Tank Engine days!), slate mines and underground cave systems to explore. Further afield you will find Shell Island, Harlech and Portmeirion as well as the Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday or want to explore Snowdonia and this wonderful part of North Wales, then this lovely holiday cottage is an ideal place.
