Dalkeith House - Self catering holiday cottage in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire, Scottish Borders, Scotland - Sleeps 10

Dalkeith House

Dalkeith House is a stunning Georgian holiday town house that is pet friendly and accommodates up to ten guests in five bedrooms (three are en-suite). Recently upgraded to the highest standard, it is ideal for groups or celebrations and is in the heart of the village of Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders, with everything on the doorstep - pubs, hotels with restaurants, cafes, grocers, butchers and bakers. Once you park the car, you really don't need to drive. Available for short breaks or longer it is perfect for celebrating special occasions or simply relaxing with friends.

The village of Newcastleton sits near to the English counties of Cumbria and Northumberland, making Hadrian’s wall and The Lakes within easy reach. Surrounded by wonderful rolling countryside, this peaceful rural haven provides an ideal setting where you can relax and truly unwind. It is wild in the winter and breathtaking in summer, making it ideal all year round.

This is a great location for those who enjoy cycling with the world-renowned 7stanes mountain bike trails nearby. Newcastleton trails offer some of the most challenging cycling, but there is also a skills area and forest trails for those looking for a more leisurely cycle ride. Also nearby is Kielder Forest and Rock UK, the local activity centre, who will happily indulge you if you want to try kayaking, abseiling, archery or fencing. For those who enjoy fishing, if the waters are running you can try fishing for salmon or sea trout on the rivers Esk and Liddel (permits can be purchased locally during season).

If golf is your passion then the challenge of the nine hole golf course is one you will remember, and worth it to take in the breathtaking views from the third hole. Alternatively go pony trekking through the forest - a great way to explore the surrounding area.

Dalkeith House is also a great base from which to explore the historic sites of the Scottish English Border, a place steeped in history and legend. Visit the local heritage museum where you can find out more about Newcastleton or Copshaw Holm; trace your family tree at the Hawick Heritage Hub which is only thirty minutes away or take a drive following the Reivers Route taking in famous sites like Mangerton and Hermitage Castle, where battles were once fought.

Local towns to visit include Hawick which is famous for its textiles, visit Wilton House and explore their beautiful gardens or Drumlanrig Tower to understand its history; Langholm, the birthplace of Thomas Telford, which offers wonderful walking country where you can climb to the top of surrounding hills and take in the superb views; Explore the ruins of both Dryburgh and Melrose Abbeys and visit Abbotsford House and gardens, home to Sir Walter Scott; At Harestanes you can spend some time visiting the crafts workshops and the Woodside Walled garden, a gem of a nursery where you can indulge in home baking and a pot of tea. Gretna is also close and offers a mix of traditional gift shops and shopping outlets.

Alternatively, stay locally and enjoy the fully enclosed garden of Dalkeith House which is a joy throughout the year and full of traditional borders, along with a large patio with plenty of seating for outdoor entertaining. Two well behaved dogs are welcome and they are able to enjoy a wide range of walks in the area.

Whether you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply want to relax with friends or family, Dalkeith House is the most perfect location.

Reviews and Testimonials for Dalkeith House

Wow! - That's the only way to describe Dalkeith House. The house is stunning, coupled with a very warm welcome and incredible attention to detail I can honestly say its the best place we've stayed. We were a group of ten aged from 15 to 60+ and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The village has a real community feel and is very friendly and the surrounding countryside is stunning. The only downside was going home! Thompson party Dec 2012

Dalkeith house is beautiful and very well furnished/equipped. It proved to be the perfect venue for our get together, we came from London, Inverness and everywhere in between! We enjoyed the local walks but were very relaxed and comfortable staying indoors, cooking, eating and drinking! We’d love to come back for the next one! Class of ’94, University of Edinburgh.

Well here we are again on a return visit! It was fabulous last time and we couldn’t stay away! As soon as we walked in through the door we felt at home – I feel we might be visiting DH often! This is a great place to meet up with friends and enjoy some down time, or party which is what we did this weekend. Thank you Everett Party, Cheam, Surrey

A fantastic weekend had by all – the house was fabulous, well and truly exceeding our expectations. The photos don’t do it justice. There is everything we needed in the house and the Sonos sound system was amazing – perfect for getting the party started! We will definitely be recommending DH to all our friends & family. Thank you. Watson Party
