Stable cottage is a charming olde worlde holiday cottage which is located on a working farm in an area that many people class as an access route to either the Lake District or Scotland. However it is an area worth visiting in its own right and one that is intriguing, engaging and historically rich as any of the regions most celebrated destinations (without the crowds).
The cottage is in the area known as Eden which is totally unspoilt, and where you will find quiet footpaths (you may be the only walkers), just waiting to be explored. These footpaths and countryside are rich in wild flowers and abundant in wildlife and if you are lucky you may see red squirrels and roe deer or buzzards circling high above.
If you are a keen bird watcher there are reserves close by at Geltsdale (hen Harriers) and Campfield Marsh (wading birds) whilst Caerlaverock with many thousands of wintering barnacle geese and swans is only approximately forty minutes away.
There are also castles both ruined and entire, stately homes, old Abbeys, open gardens, craft exhibitions, stone circles, two specialist rare plant nurseries and National Trust properties just waiting to be enjoyed. You can take a trip on the famous Carlisle/Settle railway which can be joined only eight miles away at Armathwaite or you can explore some routes put together by the owner to explore the area by either car or cycle. These routes will take you along highways and byways where you will hardly meet another vehicle, with far reaching views of The Pennines or Lakeland Fells. The routes allow you to enjoy the Eden valley which is an area often overlooked, offering undulating countryside, a patchwork of hamlets and very old villages built of local sandstone (many with village greens and streams running through them).
Locally within five miles there is Highhead Sculpture Valley and tea room (1 mile), Hutton in the Forest Historic house (5 miles), Upfront Gallery (5 miles) and the nearest pub/restaurant is just two and a half miles away.
If shopping is your pleasure then Penrith is just 9.5 miles away and full of individual specialist shops that can no longer be found in the big cities, whilst Carlisle (9.5 miles away) has all the well known chain stores, a good castle where you can have guided tours, Cathedral and museum. Here you will also find swimming pools, tenpin bowling and cinemas.
If you are a serious walker, you are on the doorstop with good access to the spectacular Lake District National park starting at Caldbeck (8 miles away), Ullswater (15 miles) and Scotland (22 miles).
Stable Cottage is the perfect get away for those who are looking to enjoy the great outdoors with a great selection of activities close by. Whether you are looking for an active or restful holiday - Stable Cottage will suit your needs.
