Curlew Rise is a spacious holiday cottage that makes an excellent central base to explore the Lake District. It offers easy access to the valleys and fells from the south and the more remote western hills and lakes are only a pleasant one hour drive away. The holiday cottage is situated amongst a small cluster of dwellings in open farmland with uninterrupted views of Lowick Moor to the North and in the distance Hoad Monument to the South. The village of Penny Bridge is just over a mile away and offers a local pub, serving food and ale. There are plenty of interesting places to visit and attractions within this lovely area. Coniston water is approximately a ten minute drive away and for those who enjoy hill walking, Dow Crag is just a little further on. Lake Windermere is also very nearby and only a fifteen minute drive. For something unexpected, seek out the unsung beauty of the Furness coastline with its glorious sandy beach hidden away at Roanhead. For quieter walking head for the Duddon Valley, an easy drive taking in beautiful views. Locally you can wander the public footpaths that link the farms, woods and lanes, whilst listening for the haunting cry of the curlews that circle up the valley following the route of Newland Beck. Early in the day you may disturb a nervous deer or heron, showing how relatively undisturbed this part of the Lake District remains. The pretty market town of Ulverston is just two miles away, with its cobbled streets and narrow alleys, providing a good range of specialist shops, food stores and eating places. Other local attractions include: Dalton Wild Life Park, Aquarium of the Lakes, Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Windermere Lake Cruises, Donald Campbell Bluebird Exhibition, Coniston Steam Gondola, Ruskin Museum and Brantwood House. |
