Taigh na Fraoch - Self catering holiday cottage in Assynt, Clasnessie, Highland, Scotland - Sleeps 6
Taigh na Fraoch, is a modern holiday home that is built in the style of a traditional Highland cottage. It nestles into the grass/heather clad moorland of beautiful, remote Assynt on the west coast of Sutherland, about half a mile from the Clasnessie Bay with its sweeping sandy beach.
The house affords lovely views of Quinag and it is possible to see the classic Assynt arc of hills and Clashnessie waterfall by walking to the top of the garden and climbing the stile.
Approximately two hour's drive from Inverness, Taigh na Fraoch is only around eight miles from the popular fishing village of Lochinver with its restaurants and shops.
The cottage has a large enclosed garden which is primarily grass, heather and rock and the surrounding area is ideal for hill walking with some of the most beautiful hills in Scotland such as Quinag, Suilven and Foinaven to name but a few. For those who prefer low level walks there are a wealth of paths and peat roads to explore.
The area is a haven for wildlife with regular sightings of seals, dolphins, deer, arctic skua, puffins, black throated divers, razorbills and guillemots among others. For those with boats or canoes there are numerous opportunities for sailing, canoeing and other watersports in the area both in the sea and on the lochs.
Cyclists are attracted to the area as the Assynt coastal road is claimed to be one of the most challenging road routes in Britain. Geologists will also find the area interesting with the Moine thrust and the NW highlands geopark at Knockan Crag.
For those who enjoy fishing, permits can be purchased for the enjoyment of brown trout fishing in the many hill lochs. There is also a stocked rainbow trout fishery at Lagg and salmon fishing in the area, along with mackerel and Pollack which can also be caught either from the shore or by boat.
Lochinver has a picture gallery, small gift/outdoor shop and is also the site of the Highland Stoneware Factory where you can watch them making pottery. Here you will find restaurants and a leisure centre (without swimming pool) in the village.
