Mill Fruit Farm sits within a lovely sheltered valley above the Doniford stream, at the foot of the Quantock Hills in Somerset. The Cottage and Strawberry Barn are set within sixteen acres of pasture land and garden where the hens produce fresh eggs for the community and the fruit and vegetables supply the household family and friends. The apple orchard produces wonderful varieties of apples between mid August to November and a flock of geese can be seen wandering around the orchard. Welsh ponies graze the sloping pastures (and always welcome a cuddle!) and the owners Labradors and Retrievers wander the grounds and can often be found sleeping in the shade under the trees should you want to give them some attention.
Stogumber is a picturesque thriving country village with the Norman Church in the square being the focal point. A good local shop sells everything from local scrumpy cider to delicious croissants and the White Horse Inn serves ale and good food throughout the day and evening. The village also boasts a fine cricket ground were many an enjoyable lazy afternoon can be spent watching a game with the enthusiastic supporters and the village holds events throughout the year including the village fete, Wassailing and the horticultural show to name just a few.
For the last twenty seven years, Stogumber has opened its gardens for a weekend in June, providing an amazing weekend for inspiration and meeting the locals, ending with a party on the Sunday night where everyone is welcome. Stogumber also has a railway station located just five minutes' walk from Strawberry Barn. One of the beautifully restored stations on the West Somerset Railway line, steam trains regularly run throughout the year between Bishops Lydeard to Minehead.
The area is a walkers paradise where you can leave your car and take to the hills, lanes, moors and mountains where you will find plenty of pubs along the way for refreshments. The Quantock Hills are on the door step and provide miles of wonderful walks where you may see Red Deer and wild ponies. On the other side of the valley is Exmoor which holds its own intrigue and opportunities for outdoor activities.
There are plenty of gardens to visit within the area including Hestercombe, Marwood, Knightshayes and Rosemoor to name just a few. The beautiful historic village of Dunster is just a short car ride away with its castle and fantastic selection of independent shops and eating establishments.
