Formerly the station masters house, this detached holiday home accommodates up to eight guests and dates back to 1850. It is located in the interesting town of Sanquhar within Dumfries and Galloway in South Scotland and has not been lived in since the station closed in 1965. However, the station platforms re-opened in 1993 and extensive refurbishments have recently been carried out to transform The Station Masters House into luxurious holiday accommodation.
Sanquhar is an interesting town with much history, Royal Patronage and the oldest post office in the world! It is located on the River Nith and lies west of Moffat and north of Thornhill. Sanquhar is an ideal holiday destination and ideal for those who enjoy outdoor activities including canoeing, trout and salmon fishing, bird watching, golf and for those staying at The Station Masters House, train spotting! Fine dining is also available locally at the Blackaddie Country House Hotel, in addition to several pubs.
Close by is the Ayrshire Coastal Path, a long distance walking route of some one hundred miles, along one of the most panoramic coastlines in the British Isles. Sanquhar is also perfectly located on the Southern Upland Way long distance path, providing plenty of opportunities for those who are keen on walking. The town has a leisure centre with swimming pool, children’s pool, sauna, steam room and gym.
There are plenty of things to see and do within the local area including: the ruins of Sanquhar castle; the historic village of Thornhill with its hotels, shops and eighteen hole golf course and Drumlanrig Castle with its superb art collection, extensive country park and beautiful gardens. The ancient town of Dumfries is too within easy reach. Steeped in history it provides plenty of things to see and do with its museums, eating establishments, shops and strong connections with Robert Burns, Scotland's most famous poet. The area is famous for its fishing facilities and both Salmon and Trout fishing can be arranged on the nearby River Nith. There is also plenty of wild life to see, and this part of Scotland is ideal for artists, both amateur and professional alike.
Although Sanquhar is in a rural location, the Scotrail train service allows you to visit Dumfries and Carlisle to the south and Glasgow to the North in only one hour and fifteen minutes. This location is also within driving distance of Edinburgh (57 Miles), Loch Lomond - Balloch (76 miles), Thornhill (11 miles), Troon (37 miles) and Turnberry (44 miles).

Reviews and Testimonials for The Station Masters House
Very impressed with The Station Master's House - superb. J.Harwood Wymondham.
The house was amazing, we truly did love it. My parents, Auntie and Uncle arrived before us and called to say how wonderful it was immediately. I don’t think they’d known what to expect and were over the moon. I had known it would be lovely but I wasn’t prepared for the size of it! Everything was well thought out and the décor was beautiful. We did a couple of local walks using the guides, had a ride into Dumfries, tried the local pub and visited Glasgow on the train. Above all we enjoyed being there, sitting round the table chattering after meals and relaxing round the fire on an evening. None of us wanted to go home. Sarah B
I think that its hard to realise until you are here just how spacious the house is. There are eight of us and the space is brilliant so no-one feels on top of each other. I was a little worried about the station, however I have quite enjoyed seeing the trains and when they pass they dont bother you. The bathrooms are also lovely and the whole house is finished to a high standard. What you have achieved with the house (from seeing the before photos) is amazing!
Just a short note to say thank you very much for an excellent week. I think the initial observation of ''Wow'' when we stepped in the front door last saturday says it all, and we all said we would not hesitate to return for another holiday. We do hope we are able to. We found Sanquhar to be a nice central place from which to travel.
