Hope Thatch a much loved and modernised thatched cottage that dates as far back as 1650 and is the oldest property in the picturesque South Hams village of Marlborough. Grade II listed, the original part of the cottage is cosy and inviting, but there’s a twist - an ultra modern extension housing the kitchen with bi-fold doors onto the enclosed garden, the family bathroom, downstairs wc and utility, and glass walled corridor. The cottage, which has been owned by the current owners and used as a holiday let for around 20 years, has been constantly maintained and improved over the years. The chimney has been re-instated to install a wood-burning stove, particularly favoured by winter guests. The new extension was added and shortly after listed building consent was given to widen the gates, the owner's provided private parking for guests. The cottage was rethatched in 2020 and since then the garden has been revamped to add a terrace for guests to dine and soak up the sun, and the entire first floor has been reconfigured and refurbished (previously Bedroom 1 was accessed via Bedroom 3, such are the quirks of a 17th century thatch!) to include new furniture, carpets, bedding etc. In order to enjoy the many and variable activities that the South Hams has to offer a cycle rack has also been added for the use of guests. It is an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of this popular part of South Devon.
Malborough as a village has much to offer with its lovely attractive cottages lining its street which is also home to two pubs serving food, a bistro, a couple of shops and a church as a focal point - all a short stroll from Hope Thatch. Ideally placed, the cottage is just less than 2 miles from the beautiful harbour town of Salcombe and equal distance from the stunning coastal haven of Hope Cove.
Whether you drive or walk to Salcombe, you will find a great selection of interesting shops, pubs and restaurants. It is a famous centre of sailing and the estuary offers a good number of lovely sheltered sandy beaches where you can relax and coastal walks for those feeling energetic! You will not only see yachts and fishing boats bobbing up and down on the water but if you are lucky you may also see dolphins and seals in the estuary and a multitude of other wildlife.
Once a haunt for smugglers, Hope Cove today offers the perfect place to relax in a beautiful coastal setting. It is only a short drive from the cottage and this delightful fishing village is a pleasure to visit with its cobbled thatched cottages, complimented by pretty colourful gardens and window boxes in the summer months. It provides beautiful clean sandy beaches and is well known for its flora and fauna (along with its fresh crab and lobster!).
This beautiful part of South Devon has been attracting visitors for many years and has a great deal to offer all ages and energy levels.
