About Hartwell

Hartwell sleeps up to ten guests and was formerly a Devonshire farmhouse which has now been converted into beautifully presented self-catering accommodation. Built during the mid 19th century, Hartwell sits in an idyllic location near to Sydenham Damerel village within easy reach of the market town of Tavistock which is located on the River Tavy.

Nestling amongst West Devon's rolling countryside, within an AONB, this delightful holiday home provides an ideal base for exploring the areas many attractions with the Dartmoor National Park just ten minutes away by car and Cornwall only five. Whatever the time of year, Hartwell provides the perfect venue for friends or family to enjoy a holiday together or celebrate a special occasion.

Sleeping is flexible with five bedrooms and there is a spacious kitchen at the heart of the house with a farmhouse table where you can sit and chat about the days adventures over supper in front of the warming oil fired Rayburn. Two sitting rooms (and a sofa in the entrance area) provide plenty of places to enjoy a quiet moment or social evening with the middle sitting room offering a cosy environment in front of the wood burner and the family room (which also has a wood burner) offering traditional entertainment with a piano, guitars and board games, plus a large television (forty inches) and Blu-ray player along with a 1960's vintage radio with modern bluetooth connection.

The outside living area is also every bit as appealing during the warmer months with some 1.5 acres of grounds to enjoy. A real haven for wildlife, regular visitors include rabbits, foxes and plenty of birds (including owls, pheasants and buzzards), along with cattle and horses grazing in the surrounding fields which add to the country setting. There are lovely walks along footpaths accessible from the farmhouse or alternatively, enjoy lazy days by the outdoor heated pool (this is available between the months of May to October and sits in an enclosed area with garden furniture for relaxing).

For those who enjoy eating out, The Royal Inn at Horsebridge is just twenty minutes on foot (one mile away) and there are a good range of pubs, restaurants and shops in Tavistock (four miles). Also nearby is the Tamar Trails Centre (just ten minutes away) which offers plenty of activities for outdoor enthusiasts including trails for walkers and cyclists, geocaching, canoeing, camp building, archery, zip wires and tree surfing to name just a few. There are also opportunities for golf, pony trekking, fishing, sailing, gentle Canadian style canoeing and clay pigeon shooting in and around the area.

The area has a host of attractions for all ages and energy levels including: Dartmoor National Park (ten minutes by car) with its pretty villages, famous ponies, miles of walks and intriguing Tors; Lydford Gorge (owned by the National Trust) and also Lydford Castle (fifteen minutes away); the award winning attraction of Morwellham Quay (under fifteen minutes) where you can step back in time and experience a taste of Victorian life; Cotehele, a magnificent NT owned country house sitting in a picturesque elevated position above the River Taymar (twenty minutes);Buckland Abbey which is also NT owned (twenty minutes) and the Miniature Pony Centre which is sure to be a hit with the children and adults alike (forty minutes drive).
