The Smithy is situated in the idyllic village of Ponsworthy in the heart of Dartmoor, and offers a magnificent base to enjoy rural peace and tranquility. It is ideally placed for walking, cycling, pony trekking and other moorland activities and comes with a dedicated team of staff to ensure that your stay is comfortable, as well as supplying local information and organising a wide range of activities such as farm visits, llama walks, fishing, golf, abseiling and hot air ballooning.
For something more leisurely, there are heritage sites and National Trust properties in the area, as well as farms and miniature pony sanctuaries. Across the moor, there are restaurants, pubs and cafés in which to sample the famous Devon cream tea and a rich variety of shops selling local produce, arts and crafts. For lazy days, there are plenty of books, games and DVDs to keep everyone entertained.
Local Widecombe-in-the-Moor is best known for the annual Widecombe Fair immortalised by the folk song involving a grey mare and 'Old Uncle Tom Cobley and All'. The village is steeped in history and local legend, and has several gift shops (including a National Trust shop) and a couple of pubs and cafés.
Dartmoor National Park is the biggest and wildest area of open country in southern England. An area of outstanding natural beauty covering over 350 square miles, this breathtaking landscape is home to a huge variety of wildlife, and featured on television's 'Seven Natural Wonders' as the top natural wonder in the South West.
The entire area is rich in history and antiquities, hosting more ancient monuments and archaeological sites than anywhere else in Europe. Many traditional tales, folklore and ghost stories stem from this unique history.
The broader West Country is home to England's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Dorset and East Devon Coast, and Devon itself boasts two dramatic coastlines with many fantastic beaches for relaxation and water sports, complementing the mild climate of the area.
Nearby Ashburton has a good selection of shops, restaurants and pubs and Torquay, Exeter and Plymouth are all within easy driving distance.

Our stay has been wonderful, well equipped cottage and relaxing garden, we could not have wanted for any more and look forward to many return visits.- A. Morris
Thank you for making The Smithy a special place to stay. The cottage is fantastic and has everything you could possibly need. Our children have loved every minute from playing hide and seek in the cupboards to saying hello to the sheep over the fence. This is our first outdoor holiday with the children and they have loved everything that the area has had to offer. We will be back.- The Cavin Family
