Reader's Cottage is a two hundred year old stone built cottage that was formerly the saddler's workshop. The cottage is very comfortable with king size bed, central heating and lovely original features. Sleeping two guests, it is ideal for couples who want to visit the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District at any time of the year.
The cottage is located in the heart of the village of Sedbergh, with its old-world atmosphere, nestling in the Howgills, surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the North of England. The Howgills are excellent for those who enjoy outdoor activities, or for those who simply want to relax amongst breathtaking countryside. Whether you want to stay locally and enjoy the wonderful walks or venture further into the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, this is a walker’s paradise. The region also provides opportunities for cycling, climbing, pot-holing, fishing, canoeing and pony-trekking. There are also six golf courses within fifteen miles of Sedbergh.
Dating back to Saxon times, Sedbergh is a thriving community with its market dating back to the 13th Century. The village has lots of character with its cobbled streets and historic houses, along with a good choice of pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops and amenities - all just a short stroll from the cottage.
The Howgills are a series of grassy rounded hills with deep ravines and numerous waterfalls. These include Cautley Spout, England’s highest above ground waterfall and the remote and secluded Uldale Force, one of Cumbria's hidden gems. Still very much unspoilt, even during the busy summer months, you can walk for miles without encountering hordes of walkers, typical of other destinations in this area.
The southern Lake District and the heart of the Yorkshire Dales are only a short drive away providing numerous attractions to suit for all ages. Dentdale, possibly the finest and most beautiful of the Cumbrian Dales, is just a few miles away. The historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is a fifteen minute drive and the nearby historic market villages of Tebay, Kirkby Stephen, Ortron and Ravenstonedale are also well worth visiting. The major town of Kendal is eleven miles away and the charming Edwardian coastal resort of Grange-over-Sands is twenty five miles.
The Upper Wensleydale village of Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales is within a twenty five minute drive to the east of Sedbergh and to the west, the Lakeland centres of Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside are a thirty five minute drive. You can see some spectacular waterfalls, including Hardraw Force near Hawes with its 90ft single drop, the famous series of waterfalls at Aysgarth Falls, and Thornton Force near Ingleton.
Slightly further afield are Swaledale with the ancient market town of Richmond and the picturesque village of Reeth; Wharfedale with its dry-stone wall and limestone landscapes; the craggy landscapes of the Lake District, with its picturesque villages and spectacular lakes and mountains; and the historic towns of Keswick and Skipton – all easilyaccessible by car.
If you want a relaxing holiday, with access to all amenities without the crowds, this is the ideal base for your holiday.
