Nearby Brampton is rich in history. Founded in the seventh century as an Anglian settlement, it is well known for its church (St Martin's) which was designed by the Pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb and is home to one of the finest sets of stained glass windows in the country. For wildlife (including birdlife) enthusiasts, Geltsdale RSPB reserve is close by and for those happy to travel further afield, Gretna Green on the Scottish borders and the Northumberland National Park are within easy reach.
Other attractions in the local area include:
Hadrian's Wall - Birdoswald Roman Fort is the nearest point from the cottage (seven miles) and is in a picturesque setting, with extensive remains of the Roman Fort. The longest remaining continuous stretch of this spectacular World Heritage Site can also be seen and explored here.
Settle to Carlisle Railway - Steeped in history, the line runs through remote regions of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines. It is considered to be one of the most scenic railways in England and there is a station at Brampton which connects to Carlisle, should you want to enjoy a spectacular day out on the train!
Classic Catherine Cookson Country for those romantics out there!
Lanercost Priory (six miles) was founded around 1166 by Henry II and displays a fine example of English architecture. The picturesque and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory holds a previously troubled history. Sitting close to Hadrian's Wall, it suffered regular attacks during the lengthy Anglo-Scottish wars and on one occasion, by Robert Bruce himself. King Edward I rested here for five months, shortly before his death, on his final campaign.
Talkin Tarn (seven miles) has much to offer with its sixty five acre lake, set amongst one hundred and twenty acres of woodland and farmland. The tarn is a perfect place for enjoying outdoor activities or a quiet stroll through the mature woodlands. Here you can windsurf, fish, sail, canoe or hire a wooden rowing boat.
Stephenson Rocket last days Tindale - This early locomotive was the most advanced steam engine of its time which worked the line between Brampton Junction and Halton Lea Gate between 1836 and 1840. The line ran past the end of the terrace of cottages but was closed in 1953. The old trackbed is now the footpath to Hallbank gate.
