Mire Garth is a stone built 17th Century holiday cottage within an amphitheatre of beautiful countryside, 500 metres from the nearest road!

From the lovingly tended garden, with its splendid views, the cottage itself offers a spacious well equipped interior. Enjoy a warm cosy open fire in the living room, dimmable lighting, beams in the bedrooms, panelled doors, and all tastefully furnished throughout. The owners maintain a high standard of décor and cleanliness, which they consider to be an important attribute to this property. There is a utility room allowing uninhibited access, without guests feeling conscious of spoiling carpets and furnishings in other parts of the house.

Adjoining the cottage is a barn which is generally unused and the main farm dwelling sits some 500 metres further up the valley. The atmosphere is unique and cannot fail to charm - a true country retreat and an idyllic hideaway suitable for all.

The cottage is accessed from a single track road three miles from Dent. It lies 330 metres above sea level, on the North Western flank of Whernside, this being Yorkshires highest peak.

It affords beautiful views within a rugged sheep farm environment where there is peace and harmony with nature - animals, birds, meadows and streams, in sunshine and wild weather alike. At night, experience ‘true dark’, with clear moonless nights affording a free look at the vastness of the constellation.

A public footpath meanders past the garden wall, giving access to many local walks, without the use of the car. Small mountain steams tumble through the surrounding pastures, great for children to splash and play, perhaps with a little supervision (or participation!) from an adult.

The garden is perfect for sitting in, watching all the bird life, admiring the scenery, or generally relaxing amongst the many diverse plants that are growing in the beds and borders.

Although Mire Garth is in a remote peaceful place, accessibility to other locations is relatively easy. Travelling West and North, and within a sixty minute drive, you can reach the Southern parts of the Lake District which offers plenty to see and do. Here you can enjoy scenic, low level lake-side rambles, energetic strenuous high level walks, rock climbing and different types of water-sports, to name just a few. Picturesque villages and small towns offer independent shopping outlets, and tearooms. Then going North and East for approximately the same length of time, there is a small but unusual range of hills called the Howgills. These are rounded grassy fells quite different from the surrounding areas. Other beautiful Yorkshire Dales with their pretty stone villages and rural crafts radiate from this area. Some rivers are suitable for fishing, and there are one or two outlets for horse riding.

East and South bring you into amazing North Yorkshire terrain. The limestone pavements and escarpments above are underpinned beneath by large cave formations, which can be explored by self venture, or guided, through the show cave system.

All of this landscape is joined by the well known Settle/Carlisle railway, with its cuttings, tunnels and viaducts. It weaves from valley to valley, punctuated with beautifully maintained stations including Dent which is some 10km from Mire Garth and is the highest station in England. At certain times of the year, you may see a steam hauled train passing over the Ribblehead viaduct - an amazing sight!

Finally heading South and West where you will see waterfalls, caverns, and eventually rather more gentle pastoral landscapes, all within the one hour time span from Mire Garth.

Further afield, in one to two hours, there are castles, stately homes and historical places including Hadrians wall. The children may even like a trip to Blackpool.

Several recent visitors to Mire Garth have cycled to some of the nearer attractions. Bring your bike and do like-wise! The nearest pub and shop is in the cobbled village of Dent (three miles) where meals are served daily, should you wish to dine out.

  • Utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board. There are work surfaces and a sink, along with storage for wood and coal and the water filter unit from a private water supply. Cycles, walking boots etc can be kept safely here and the owners have a policy for recycling as many waste items as possible and boxes are provided for this purpose.
  • Lounge with television, video, DVD player, hi-fi system and lovely open fire - ideal for those more chilly nights.

  • Two single bedrooms - one of the single rooms is a walk through room to access the double room. All beds are provided with duvets, electric blankets and all bed linen is supplied. An electric heater is also available in each room.
  • Bathroom with white toilet, sink and bath suite. There is an electric shower above the bath, shaver point and light next to mirror and a cylinder cupboard with immersion heater which supplies all hot water for the house.
  • Ground floor WC and walk in shower - this small area leads off the utility room and is available most of the time, but the owners do shut it down during the winter months because of frost, and the potential for burst pipes.

Outside: There is a well tended cottage style garden giving lots of seasonal interest with natural stone patio that has table and chairs and a chimenea. A portable barbecue can be brought out for ‘alfresco’ dining and the garden is completely enclosed with a wall, giving good privacy without obstructing the views.

Additional information: Special discount may apply during low and mid season for two guests. Towel hire available at £4 per head. Electricity is charged at the current tariff rate from the utility company. Coal for the fire can be purchased from the owners. Travel cot on request. Unfortunately pets cannot be accepted as the cottage is part of a working farm. If you smoke, please do so outside the building. The change-over day is Saturday exclusively during the high and mid season. Short breaks available in low season, with the possibility of a flexible changeover day. Currently mobile phone signals in the immediate location of the cottage are poor but the farm next door will help in any emergency.
