It also boasts the best beaches and highest sunshine hours of anywhere in the United Kingdom. Here you can escape the crowds and enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, wildlife (including dolphins, wild goats, whales, seals and otters) and explore the lovely coastline with its beautiful coastal walks. This is also birdwatcher's paradise with rare birds to be seen including corncrakes, choughs and even golden eagles!
There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy including cycling, walking, golf, surfing, tennis, fishing (both sea fishing and fly fishing for trout) or sailing and this is an ideal holiday destination for couples, families or adventurous singles. You are also able to bring your dog away with you as the cottages welcome dogs.
The island offers a spectacular variety of landscapes and views. In a day's walk, you can see trout filled lochs, white sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs which are a haven to thousands of nesting guillemots, seagulls and terns. At low tide there is a glistening mile-long stretch of sand that joins Colonsay to the Isle of Oransay with its 14th century priory housing its great carved stone cross and cloister.
For those interested in history, there are ancient hilltop forts, mysterious standing stones and ruined chapels to discover dotted around the island. The island also boasts a general store, bookshop, bakery, brewery and oyster farm and there is also a resident doctor and regular church services in the islands two churches.

With over twenty holiday cottages accommodating from two to twelve guests individually, Colonsay Estate has something to offer everyone, whether you are looking for a romantic break away, a family holiday or a large holiday home to celebrate a special occasion.
Formerly restored crofters’ cottages, Victorian farmhouses and former estate houses, the holiday cottages are all very individual and are scattered around the island, offering guests a good degree privacy, with most having spectacular sea or loch views.
Each Cottage is comfortably furnished and as well equipped as space allows with most having a dishwasher, washing machine and microwave, along with an open fire/log burner and a garden area with outdoor furniture.
Baleromindubh Cottage is featured in this advertisement and accommodates up to four guests with accommodation all on one level. It is situated on the east side of the island with stunning views towards Jura and Islay. Accessed along a half-mile rough track, Baleromindubh Cottage provides the following accommodation:
Sitting room with comfortable seating and an open fire.
Kitchen/dining area with microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, table/chairs and another open fire (with back boiler).
One double bedroom.
One bedroom with bunk beds.
Family bathroom with a bath, WC, wash basin and shower.
Additional information: All bed linen and towels are included in the rental price. Electricity and coal are paid for separately. Please note that televisions are not provided as there is no terrestrial television signal on the island. However, on the whole, guests are delighted to turn to games and reading on a rainy day (every house has a selection of games and books). There is a launderette at Colonsay House available free to guests. Dogs are welcome for a small additional charge, and a maximum of two well behaved dogs are allowed. There is free WIFI access for all guests at The Colonsay hotel. There is also a tennis court available free to guests every morning at Colonsay House.
